I'm a twenty-four year old who likes her fiction on the more macabre side of things. Werewolves, vampires and other creatures of the night are my main literary interests. Of course I still enjoy a good fantastical YA read too, and I've dabbled in lighthearted romance once or twice. I have a desk job at a web design firm that takes up most of the daylight hours during the week. When I'm not doing the day job thing I like to write, read, watch movies and costume. I'm also happily married and the mother of one (or two if you count the cat!).
I started writing when I was very young, my first story being an homage to one of my favorite SNL skits. In fourth grade I entered a writing contest and wrote a story about a manatee who had to travel far away to get a medicinal seaweed to cure his sick mother. I wrote, edited and illustrated the book by myself, and got help from my parents to make a real cover for it. Unfortunately my story was too long to win a place in the picture book category, but I did get an honorable mention ribbon so I was happy. From then on my dream was set: get published!
Since 2004, I've participated in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) in November and enjoyed every outrageous second of it. I've learned a lot about writing and myself while trying to meet the annual speed-novel-writing challenge of 50,000 words in 30 days. Thanks to NaNoWriMo I have completed two rough drafts (and have three incomplete rough drafts ranging in length from 17,000 words to 50,000 words). The earlier works aren't great, but I'm currently working on editing one of my novel drafts and hope to begin the submissions process with it by the end of 2008.
While it's certainly not my strength at this point, I'm also trying my hand at short story writing this year. And, in an attempt to broaden my writing horizons, I'm participating in the 2 Year Novel (2YN) course offered over at Forward Motion, a great community for any aspiring writer.
