    Hop Against Homophobia 2012

Hello visitors and welcome to my blog! :) I’m Violet Hilton (as you could probably tell from the site name!), author of predominantely gay romance, urban fantasy and zombie tales. And not to be confused with the famous conjoined twin ;)

Today’s blog post is in honor and observance of the International Day Against Homophobia. I realize that most of you who have joined this blog hop as either contributors or visitors are already aware of homophobia and the bullying it can and does cause. My hope with this post is that it will both help those who are already aware to add a little more weight and thought to how you help stand against homophobia, and also for this post to sit here in the internet ether for people who aren’t as aware to stumble upon.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a very wise person, so what I have to say probably won’t be profound by any means, but I hope it helps at least one person, even in a small way. ♥

    About Fear

To quote Dune, one of my favorite books:

“Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.”

Homophobia is like any other irrational fear in that it makes people experiencing it react without thinking. Same sex relationships, love and intercourse are still a huge unknown to a lot of people who are either closed-minded or ignorant, which I think contributes largely to the continuing prevalence of this fear. Humans tend to be afraid of what they don’t know. If you’re afraid you usually flee or fight, but you don’t take the rational route to try to understand and learn about this mysterious thing that’s scaring the crap out of you.

I’m not saying being afraid is an excuse for treating other people horribly – no. But at its core, fear, phobia, is the cause.

    Helping Others Deal with Homophobia

It can be difficult to remember that the person tossing out angry slurs is still, yes, a person with feelings. And it’s likely the homophobic person has forgot that the gay (or lesbian, bisexual or trans) person they’re acting out against is also a human being. If you want to help open someone’s eyes to how their homophobia is harmful and baseless, you could start by reminding them that gay people are people too. They have feelings, families, friends, loves and lives just like everyone else. They just happen to be attracted to people of their own gender.

If you can open the lines of communication and have an actual discussion with a homophobic person, then you can also ask the person why they’re so bothered by and afraid of homosexuality. Listen to them and see if they are interested in abating their fear.

Some people really dislike certain sex acts, and that’s perfectly fine. Not everyone is turned on or off by the same things. This adds spice and variety to life. But it can also make people react rather viscerally regarding anything that strongly rubs them in the off direction.

Most people are comfortable with the idea of love and romance on some level, which can be easier to focus on in a discussion than the lust or sex aspect. Yes, sex is a large part of homosexuality, just like it’s a large part of heterosexuality or any other sexuality. But that’s not all there is to being gay. Love is a big deal for humans mentally, emotionally, culturally and even spiritually. I think romantic love is a freedom that is very easy for heterosexual people (or even non-heterosexual people in heterosexual relationships) to take for granted. But it’s something everyone is entitled to. Being loved and loving shouldn’t be reviled or regulated. Love is a basic human right.

    Choosing Your Battles

But it’s important, too, to recognize when someone is so gripped by their fear that they could become violent. Yes, it’s important to take a stand in any way you can, but don’t purposefully put yourself in harm’s way. It’s sad but true that some people don’t want to put themselves in someone else’s shoes, let alone change.

Religious views can also be a serious barrier in helping to open minds and hearts. Many people (I live in the South, and this is a particularly hefty issue here) will not change their perceptions of the tenets of their religion, no matter how valid an alternate interpretation or viewpoint may be.

It can also be difficult to deal with family, coworkers and close friends who are homophobic. I deal with this a lot, and unfortunately I know it’s just best to “let sleeping dogs lie” in some situations and with certain people.

That being said, I try to be as open as possible with everyone I can, especially when meeting new people. I’m a bisexual woman in a heterosexual monogamous relationship who primarily writes and reads gay male romantic and erotic fiction. I’m not ashamed of appreciating love and sexuality in its many forms, and neither should anyone else!

Full disclosure: I’m not a person without phobias, but I’ve mostly worked through my myrmecophobia (fear of ants) and nyctophobia (fear of the dark). The omphalophobia (no laughing – I’m terrified of bellybuttons), however, seems to be here to stay, though it’s not as bad as it used to be.

    A Giveaway!

As a thanks for stopping by today, I’m going to be holding a little drawing :) The prize will be a copy of my ebook Rogue Wolf, a gay romance space opera in which two space pirates fall in love while on the run.

To be eligible for the drawing you must be 18 or older. All you have to do is comment on this post with one (or both if you’re feeling as verbose as I have been!) of the following:

    • a way you have started an open discussion about homophobia that had positive results
    • a phobia of yours and one way you’ve tried to overcome it

After the hop is over (I’m calling it midnight EST on May 20th for my blog), I’ll use a random number generator to select a winner and notify them by email and a new post. Just be sure to include your email address when leaving a comment (it should be mandatory on the comment form and shouldn’t be visible to the public). Only one comment per person will count toward the drawing.

    Happy hopping! :)

p.s. if your comment doesn’t show up right away, don’t panic! I get a lot of spam, so moderate the comment queue manually :B

  3. Get Ready to Hop

    April 26, 2012 by violet

I came across an interesting upcoming blog event today: Hop Against Homophobia. It’s a blog hop (I’d not heard of this before, but seems fun!) geared towards writers, readers and publishers of M/M books with a focus on promoting awareness of homophobia. I’ve never participated in any blog events before as more than a commenter/reader, but figured this would be a good one to jump into :)

The Hop will start on May 17th, the International Day Against Homophobia, and will run until May 20th. As a participant, I’ll be making a special post and holding a little drawing here on my blog for a free copy of Rogue Wolf.

I’m a little nervous about it since I’m a noob when it comes to contests and that sort of thing, but it should be fun :D

  4. Another Chance

    April 23, 2012 by violet

Last week I actually managed to find the motivation to put two of my zombie short stories out on submission. Working Stiffs is out for the third time (maybe that’ll be the charm?), while Stray is out for its very first shot at publication. I’m starting at the top this time, shooting for competitive, selective paying markets, so I really need to just forget these two are out for the handful of months I’ll be waiting for response. Easier said than done, but I’m hoping my new WIP will help keep me distracted.

The WIP now has a name, too! I’m calling it “Another Chance” since it strongly reflects the plot and suits my renewed attempts to be more prolific in my writing. I’m not sure how long this story will be, but it has the potential to be novella or novel length. And with one good plot bunny, another two or three always hop along. As it stands, Another Chance may either be split into two books (each focusing on one of the two MCs) or else done as a two section book. It’ll probably depend on overall length and story flow. There’s also already potential plot for a spin off featuring a secondary character, but I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself. My ideas always hold such promise, but getting them out in a format that I can share has always been one of my big issues. That and finishing what I start. :B

But so far so good with this story! It’s heavy with themes of redemption and reconciliation, as the working title might imply. Not everything will be happy and perfect in the end, cause hey it never is in real life, but the heroes will certainly be happy together :) I’m hoping to get at least another 3k words written on it this week. Really, my big goal is to have the first draft finished by the end of June so I can get it to my critique group in July and get it out on submissions in September. It may be a pipe dream, but I feel compelled to set some sort of goal.

  5. Old School Methods

    April 17, 2012 by violet

    Who  needs an outline?

I think going back to “seat of the pants with a vague plot and solid characters” is just the way I need to go to get back in the game. I’ve always written best when my plots are character driven and character focused, I think, and so this feels right at the moment. Not over-structured. Not too unstructured. A happy medium.

I pulled two old plot ideas w/ character blurbs out of the vault and started writing the one that grabbed me most. Scene the first is done and I’ve got that old, wonderful feeling back, that feeling like I’m breathing life into these people. <3

  6. Starting From Scratch

    April 13, 2012 by violet

I think I just need to go back to square one. I’ve fallen out of immediate love with the story concepts I had in the works, the ones that were either in progress or in outline form. It’s time to start new with fresh characters and fresh worlds instead of trying to painfully rehash the same ones over again for the nth time. All that hoping that a fresh coat of paint on these things would improve them just hasn’t panned out in the long run.

And it has been the long run – two years now since my first (and only) ebook was published.

What have I been doing in all this time? I’ve been neck deep in hobbies. Hobbies that I’ve recently pushed aside in favor of focusing, again, on my true love. I’ve been writing more in the last several months than I have in a while, but it’s all been casual writing with friends. I feel like I’ve been learning even more about what makes strong characters, what makes strong plots and that I shouldn’t be afraid of my weak points. I have my friends to thank for that <3

  7. Enemy Mine: Procrastination, Laziness & Lack of Confidence

    August 10, 2011 by violet

Hi, my name is Violet and I’m a big fat slacker.

Okay, now that we’ve got that out of the way, I can mention that I have worked on Prince’s Ransom several times this calendar year. I created a nice finalized map for the world it’s set in, have added more world building type details into the story itself and actually did some other editing and writing on it. But… (and this is a big but) I still haven’t finished the first draft. There are only about 10-20k words left to go for me to tie this all together and set the heroes on their merry way into HEA land.

    So what’s the hold up?

Lack of confidence was what started it. I was cowed by some reviews of Rogue Wolf that described its sexual scenes as mediocre. And then some of my friends whom I write with just for fun kept writing these amazingly heated and well written sex scenes, which just made me feel my work paled in comparison. And then I hitched a ride on the lazy train and camped out in the “I’ll do it later, but I’d rather do *insert other hobby here* now” car.

My husband’s been mentioning more and more lately that I need to write more, to get more published, which is hilarious coming from the man who bet me at Rogue Wolf’s acceptance that I’d never sell 100 copies. He has utter confidence in my writing now – so why don’t I?

I think it’s time for my Internal Editor to go on vacation again so I can just write these stories that are waiting in the wings to be told. I have two completed outlines that I’ve worked on this year. The characters are dear to me and I want other people to share their stories. One is a m/m Regency romance and the other is a contemporary m/f romance about gamer nerds (mentioned here before a long time ago, but now much improved in the outline and character development!).

But before I do anything else with those, I have to finish the first draft of A Prince’s Ransom.

  8. Worlds and World Building

    August 3, 2010 by violet

One of the things I love best about writing is creating my own worlds. A lot of them, particularly the urban fantasy ones, are very similar to our own with magical or supernatural elements in the mix. My sci-fi “world” is more of a universe unto itself, or at the very least a galaxy apart from ours. And then there’s the fantasy world I’ve been developing on and off for around five years.

My current big WIP, A Prince’s Ransom (APR), takes place in this fantasy world. At the time I wrote the story I just needed a non-Earth human-based world to set my story in, but the only one I had available was Caerth… a high fantasy world I admittedly created for a D&D campaign that never got off the ground. Caerth was filled with all sort of history from different fantasy races an an expansive pantheon, as well as detailed maps I was already familiar with. But the world of APR didn’t need elves or dwarves or orcs in it at all. What it did need were non-Earth kingdoms to play with and fantastic creatures like sea monsters and dragons. I said “screw it” and set the story in Caerth anyway, just ignoring the high fantasy elements of the world as if they didn’t exist in APR.

Now, currently, I’m working on fixing the map (yes, instead of actively writing the story… erm oops) and I’ve been sucked into a whirlwind of world building! I’m in the process of reconciling “present day” Caerth, the setting of APR, with the “old” Caerth. This world is very rich with different cultures and peoples, but the only real changes I’m making are doing away with dark elves and the idea that there are separate “fantasy races” since… there are already enough Tolkien rip offs/spin offs out there, aren’t there? This isn’t to say there’s no room for physical differences between countries/continents, but much like Earth, the populace is “human” in nature.

Most of these things won’t effect APR, other than serving as a more solid foundation and providing reference points for the world itself. The good part about this is that I can come back to Caerth later and find other interesting people to write about over the course of its history. Even if most of them aren’t marketable works, it’s something I’ve been wanting to do for years for myself. :)

World building is rewarding and a lot of fun, but it’s also very time consuming!

I’m in the process of switching my website’s CMS over to WordPress, so please excuse the mess while I get everything set up! It may be a few days before everything is where I want it to be, so thank you for bearing with this upgrade :)
